Tone Zone

Ever fancy having a go at playing in the local playground? Well, the opportunity might be just around the corner….

More that 58 million elderly people regularly engage in sports and fitness exercises in China, so the Chinese authorities must be doing something right! In 1998, the National Fitness Corner concept was introduced – with the introduction of public sports and fitness grounds and facilities, especially targeted to provide space for older people to do physical exercises.

During a state visit to China, President Mary McAleese was intrigued to see adults of all ages exercising in parks, on what resembled playground equipment. The key to getting older people exercising, it seems, is play. When she got back to Ireland, President McAleese discussed the idea with Mary Nally, the TAF Chairperson. The outcome: The Tone Zone, an outdoor space with equipment designed specifically for adults where people of all ages can exercise in the open air.

The first Tone Zone in Ireland is situated in a recreational area in Dunshaughlin Co. Meath, near an existing skateboard park and a children’s playground. There are nine pieces of exercise equipment, some of which can accommodate up to four adults at one time. Users can improve joint mobility and perform aerobic exercises on an air walker, parallel bars, a leg press, a rocking horse, self-weighted leg press, a sit-up board and sitting or standing rotators. The robust, colourful machines are constructed to the same safety standards required of children’s playground equipment, are easy to maintain and will withstand tough weather conditions.

Who benefits?

A Tone Zone is accessible, free, and easy to use. It brings the generations together. It can help facilitate and strengthen local social contacts for older people who may feel lonely or isolated, an emotional health gain. There is also a physical health gain in that the machines are geared to improve cardiovascular health, and also enhance muscle strength, stamina and joint mobility.

Want to set up your own Tone Zone?
The Tone Zone equipment costs around €5,000 and the ground works cost between €50,000-€60,000.
