Health Initiatives

Each year since 2000, TAF has organised a major health initiative. Through consultation and discussion with TAF members, other older people and service providers, specific needs have been identified. Each year, the focus for a health initiative is decided. We then plan what the health initiative will involve, seek funding where possible, organise premises and personnel as required and advertise the initiative among the target audience. Participation levels in all initiatives has been very high and the feedback very positive.

In the past, we have organised the following initiatives:

  • Older women’s health
  • Men’s health
  • People with disabilities
  • Dental and oral health
  • Optical screening

In 2007, the focus was on providing up to date factual information on positive steps that one can take to improve their own health and wellbeing, through exercise, meditation, relaxation, positive lifestyle choices (nutrition, physical activity), and on prevention where possible. Our initiatives also have a stong emphasis on screening and regular health check up's.

As a result of past initiatives, particularly the Older Women's Health initiative, a strong desire for the need for similar health inititaives for men was iterated by many of our participants. As a result we developed and delivered such a programme in consulation with local men (aged between 30 and 80). Other benefits of these initiatives included dental and oral screening for members, optical screening, and focus groups on health related issues and needs.
